THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN MACROPHAGE MIGRATION INHIBITORY FACTOR SERUM LEVELS WITH DENGUE SHOCK SYNDROME IN CHILDREN

Background : Dengue shock syndrome (DSS) is a severe and threatening condition in dengue infection. Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a cytokine that play important role in inflammation and immunologic process which is related with severe condition in dengue infection. The theory has been proven in some studies with adult subjects, but no study has been done in pediatric population. The aim of this study was to find the association between MIF serum level with DSS in children. Material : This is a cross sectional study in Dengue infected children aged 1-12 years old, from August 2016 until July 2017. Subject infected with dengue fever (DF), dengue hemorrhagic fever grade (DHF) 1 and 2 are grouped as non DSS meanwhile DHF grade 3 and 4 are group as DSS. The association between MIF level and DSS is tested with chi square and logistic regression by considering of confounding variables such as age, gender, secondary infection and obesity. We determined the cut off point of MIF level is 54.7 ng/ml from the previous study. Results : We analyzed 32 subjects with DSS and 35 subjects non DSS in this study. Subject with MIF ?54.7 ng/ml is associated with DSS (adjusted Odds Ratio (OR) 76.89; confident interval (CI) 95% 7.61-776.24) with p-value below 0.001. Conclusions : The result of this study proved that MIF is associated with DSS in children
