OBJECTIVE: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is the most common rheumatic disease in children. Parental knowledge regarding JIA is necessary to help in the management and to prevent complications. The purpose of this research is to investigate the parental knowledge about JIA in Dr. Soetomo Academic General Hospital, Surabaya. METHOD: A descriptive study was conducted in pediatric ward and outpatient clinic of Dr. Soetomo Academic General Hospital Surabaya during March-May 2019. Subject was parents who had child below 16 years of age and did not suffer from JIA. They were assessed by using a predesigned questionnaire which contains 37 closed-ended questions. The questionnaire addressed 7 aspects of parental awareness about JIA. They were definition, etiology, signs and symptoms, diagnosis, therapy, complication, and quality of life. The satisfactory knowledge was defined as the parents could answer more than half of the questions in each aspect correctly. The overall total score was 37. RESULT: The overall mean total score of 100 parents was 23.19/37. Only 31% parents were aware of the general terminology of rheumatic disease in children. Total parents who could reach a satisfactory knowledge in each aspect were 96% for definition, 90% for etiology, 71% for signs and symptom, 50% for diagnosis, 82% for therapy, 70% for complication, and 60% for quality of life. Neither parental education level, sex, nor age affected the total score and the satisfactory knowledge in each aspect. CONCLUSION: The majority of parents reached satisfactory knowledge although they were still unaware of the general terminology of rheumatic disease before.
