ASSOCIATION BETWEEN ALLERGIC DISEASES AND IDIOPATHIC NEPHROTIC SYNDROME IN CHILDREN
Friando Glorio Boneka, Raynald Takumansang, Diana Takumansang-Sondakh
OBJECTIVE: Numerous reports during the last 60 years have reported a strong association between idiopathic nephrotic syndrome and atopic disorders. Idiopathic nephrotic syndrome can be precipitated by allergic reactions and has been associated with both aeroallergens (pollens, mold, and dust) and food allergies. A review of the literature suggests that although some idiopathic nephrotic syndrome cases may be associated with allergies, evidence that it is a type of allergic disorder or can be induced by a specific allergen is weak. This study aimed to assess the association between allergic diseases with idiopathic nephrotic syndrome in children.
METHOD: We used data from the medical record between 2016-2019 in children with idiopathic nephrotic syndrome who were still in neither treatment nor already completing the treatment, along with the allergic history of food allergy, atopic dermatitis, insect bites reaction, drugs allergy, and asthma. A cross-sectional study with chi-square analyzation to analyze the relationship between allergic disease and idiopathic nephrotic syndrome.
to analyze the relationship between allergic disease and idiopathic nephrotic syndrome.
RESULT: The result of 91 children with idiopathic nephrotic syndrome, there were 21 children with allergic disease, within them was boys, and girls. The Pearson chi-square analysis shows an association between allergic disease and idiopathic nephrotic syndrome, even though it was not significant statistically (OR 0.467 p = 0.075).
CONCLUSION: There was an association between allergic disease with idiopathic nephrotic syndrome, but statistically not significant.
Keywords: Idiopathic nephrotic syndrome, allergic disease, association, children
