BACKGROUND: Neonatal sepsis is one of causes of mortality in neonates. There is some factor can be worsen sepsis. The incidence of neonatal sepsis in Indonesia from 1-18 in 1000 live births, and contribute about 20,5% mortality in neonates. In developing country still have many problem associated with neonatal sepsis in first month of life. OBJECTIVE: To see low birth weight as mortality risk factor in neonatal sepsis and describe the incidence in Wangaya General Hospital, Denpasar METHOD: A case control study conducted in NICU Department of Child Health, Wangaya General Hospital, Denpasar from April 2016 until April 2019. Sixty two patient with neonatal sepsis who meet the inclusion and exclusion with consecutive sampling criteria enrolled in this study from April 2019 then divided into two dead and alive group. This study analyzed with multivariate analysis logistic regression. RESULT: Total of neonatal sepsis were 62 cases about 3% of born babies, 69,4% were boys, 45,2% with low birth weight, 43,5% with premature rupture of membranes, 22,6% premature gestational age, 53,2% asphyxia. In this study, low birth weight associated with the mortality of neonatal sepsis (OR 5,2; p = 0,046; 95% CI 0,092 to 0,978) and premature gestational age, method of delivery, premature rupture of membranes, asphyxia, respiratory distress syndrome not associated with the mortality of neonatal sepsis. CONCLUSION: The incidence of neonatal sepsis in NICU Wangaya General Hospital was about 3% of born babies. Low birth weight associated with mortality in neonatal sepsis and increase risk 5 times than normal weight.
