Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate the histopathological effect of therapeutic hypothermia on the kidneys of hypoxic-ischemic newborn piglets. Methods: Twenty five newborn piglets were obtained within 24 h of birth were classified into; control group (C group; n = 5), hypoxic insult with normothermia group (HI-NT group; n=12), and hypoxic insult with therapeutic hypothermia group (35degree, 24hours, HI-HT group; n=8). 5 days after insult, all piglets were sacrificed under deep anesthesia by isoflurane inhalation. The kidneys were perfused with phosphate-buffered paraformaldehyde and immersed in formalin buffer, studied the territory fibrosis in renomedullary region by Azan staining and evaluated the score. Results: The scores of fibrosis area in Azan staining were; C group :1.00 ± 0.46 (average ± SD) and HI-NT group :2.85± 0.93 and HI-HT group :3.58± 1.14, respectively. Fibrosis areas of HI-NT group and HI-HT group were wider than C group. There was no statistical difference between HI-NT group and HI-HT group. Conclusion: Renal fibrosis was affected by perinatal asphyxia, therapeutic hypothermia might not prevent renal fibrosis suggested by histopathology.
