CORRELATION OF BRAIN NATRIURETIC PEPTIDE WITH THE SIZE OF SEPTAL DEFECT IN CHILDREN WITH ATRIAL SEPTAL DEFECT
Haryanty Huntoyungo, St Aizah Lawang, Dasril Daud
Background. Ventricular septal defect (ASD) is one of the most common forms of congenital heart disease (CHD). Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) is a heart marker released into the circulation during after pressure overload, expansion of heart volume and increased stress on the wall of the myocardium.
Methods. This study is a case control study, from March 2018 to December 2018 in children undergoing outpatient and inpatient care at Dr. RSUP Wahidin Sudirohusodo Makassar who fulfills the inclusion criteria. Univariate and multivariate analyzes were performed to show the correlation of Brain Natriuretic Peptic (BNP) levels with the magnitude of the defect in Atrial Septum Defect (ASD).
Results. The results showed that the average BNP level of patients with small ASD was 65.5 pq, moderate ASD was 273.2 pq and in large DSA was 654.5 pq and showed significant differences between the mean BNP levels in the ASD group. The statistical test results showed that the correlation between BNP levels and ASD diameter was significant with p = 0.001 (p<0.05) and r = 0.829 with the Y regression equation (BNP level) = 2,624 + 0,009X (ASD diameter in mm).
Conclusion. The level of brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) is a heart marker that can predict the size of the diameter in pediatric patients with ASD. Asianotic CHD patients who are suspected of ASD with high BNP levels can result in patients suffering from moderate-to-large ASD.
