Evania Astella Setiawan, Rina Agustina, Muzal Kadim
Objectives: To investigate the correlation between gender and nutritional status with depression score among urban Indonesian adolescents.
Method: The present study was a 10-year follow-up of a pervious clinical trial on probiotic supplementation (n = 494 children). Involving 238 adolescents aged 11-17 years. Nutritional status was measured with anthropometry assessment by using height-for-age z-score (HAZ), body mass index-for-age z-score (BMIZ) and waist circumference (WC). Depression score was measured using children depression inventory (CDI) that has been adapted to Indonesian language. Correlation was analyzed by Spearman and association by logistic regression.
Result: The adolescents’ mean age was 15.3 years, the mean HAZ was -1.06, the median BMIZ was -0,36 and median waist circumference was 69.9. The median CDI score among adolescents was 10, with a classification of being suspicious for depression of 7.6%. There was correlation between BMIZ and waist circumference with depression score (r = 0.141, p = 0,029 and r = 0.142, p=0.028, respectively). However, HAZ was not correlated with CDI score. Gender type was associated with being depression (p = 0.015) with male had higher odds for not getting depression than female (or = 1.515, 95% ci 0.567 – 4.053).
Conclusion: gender, BMIZ, and waist circumference are correlated with CDI score. Future studies are needed to assess the effect of lifestyle changes and empowerment program for depression preventive approach in adolescent through nutritional and body image approach.
