Abstract Body
Introduction: Antimicrobial consumption increases Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) with impact on patient outcome, health care cost and environment. Objectives: To describe antibiotic consumption before and after implementation of an antibiotic specific prescription chart. Methods: This two staged clinical audit was conducted at the University Paediatric Unit of Lady Ridgeway hospital, from 1st to 28th February 2025 (pre intervention) and 23rd May to 22nd June 2025 (Post intervention). Data regarding antibiotic consumption were collected using a Microsoft Excel sheet, before and after implementation of an antibiotic specific prescription chart. Analysis was done by Microsoft Excel application to calculate Days of therapy (DOT), Length of therapy (LOT) and Defined Daily Doses (DDD) per 1000 patient days. Results: 749 and 752 patients were included in pre and post stages respectively with 13.6% reduction in total patient days. DOT and LOT per 100 patient days were reduced by 37 .3% and 41.9%. DDDs per 1000 patient days were 39.9% less after the intervention. Parenteral: oral ratio (pre-0.68, post 0.66) and mean number of antibiotics per patient showed no changes. DDDs in ccess category antibiotics were pre: post- 200.74: 93.33 and that of watch category were pre: post- 311.38: 171.77 . Conclusions: Significant improvement in antibiotic usage was observed in post implementation stage with opportunity to modify the route of administration, indicating the importance of long term utilization of the chart to sustain the changes.
