Abstract Body
Background: Growth is believed to improve after a kidney transplant. Adequate catch-up growth following a kidney transplant may result in normal stature.
Methodology: A retrospective observational study was carried out among post renal transplant children at TH Peradeniya. A total of 30 children were recruited to the study between the ages of 11 to 18 years. The rate of height increase in the twelve months before and after transplantation was calculated as the pre- and post-renal transplant height velocities, which were then compared for statistical significance using the paired T-test.
Results: All the participants had a functioning graft. None of them had a history of previous orcurrent use of Growth Hormone. Majority of the participants had no history of being onprednisolone prior to transplantation (n= 26, 86.7%).Two-thirds of the participants (n= 20, 66.7%) had no increase in height in the year before transplantation, with a mean height velocity of 0.08cm/ month (SD=0.16 cm/month) in the total study population. The mean height velocity in the year post-transplantation was 0.7cm/ month (SD=0.36 cm/month). The paired t-test showed a statistically significant difference in the pre- and posttransplantation velocities in the study population (t (28) = -8.78, p
