THE EFFECT OF NUTRITIONAL MANAGEMENT ON GROSS MOTOR FUNCTION AND NUTRITIONAL STATUS OF CHILDREN WITH CEREBRAL PALSY WHO GET PHYSIOTERAPY

Background : Cerebral palsy (CP) is a cause of severe physical disability in children, characterized by a limitation of activity caused by developmental disorders. Besides of neurodevelopmental abnormalities, CP also considered as a cause of malnutrition and inadequate nutrition intake, may affect to the outcome of therapy.
Material : We conduct a Quasi Experimental Research One group pretest and Posttest Design to 41 children of CP aged 1-3 years, who received intensive physiotherapy. Gross motor function was assessed using Denver Developmental Screening Test II. Nutritional status was assessed using WHO standards. Nutritional management education were given to all patients according to Pediatric Nutrition Care and WHO standard. Statistical analysis using Chi Square test.
Results : All of forty-one children were included, there were differences in gross motor function in both groups, but more significantly in adequate compliance group. Both pre and post intervention group showed a significant result in gross motor function, where the DDST score for pre intervention group [mean 6.91( SD 5.14 ] and post intervention [ mean 8.78 (SD 6.98) ] with p value < 0.001. Weight for age z-score were also significantly improved for pre intervention group [mean -1.84 (SD 1.81)] compared to the post intervention group [mean -1.61(SD 1.88)], with p value 0.04. In the multivariate study found that compliance has effect on the improvement of the Denver score with [OR 10.46 (95% CI 1.73 - 63.16 (p= 0.01))].
Conclusions : Nutritional management education has effect on the improvement of final DDST score and WAZ value in children with CP who had received intensive physiotherapy, with compliance as determinant factors.
