Background : Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS) is one of the most cause disability and developmental disorders, varying from neurological disorders, and other systemic consequences in children. However, CRS surveillance has not been well documented. Objective : We investigate incidence, clinical manifestations and outcomes of CRS in Central Java, Indonesia, to provide input to the governmentfor the importance of CRS vaccines.
Material : A descriptive study involving a review of congenital anomalies associated with CRS cases at Dr. Kariadi Hospital from March 2015 to March 2018. The CRS cases are categorized according to WHO classification. This study involved children who aged <1 year old, and was conducted at pediatric outpatient clinic, pediatric ward and neonatology wards Dr. Kariadi Hospital
Results : 111 patients met the criteria for suspected CRS during the three-year study. Most of them 36% came from Semarang and the others were referred from various cities in central Java. Among those patients, 21,6% were classified as laboratory-confirmed, 51.4% were clinically-compatible, epidemiologi call linked 4,5%, and 22.5% were classified as discarded cases. Among the laboratory-confirmed CRS cases, 62,5% of children had cataract congenital, 58,3 % showed microcephaly, 54,1% of children had congenital heart disease (CHD), and 37,5% had hearing impairment. Furthermore, all mothers had not been given rubella-containing vaccines.
Conclusions : The major clinical manifestations CRS in infants in Dr. Kariadi Hospital are cataract congenital, microcephaly, CHD, and hearing impairment. This finding emphasizes the necessity to perform an epidemiological study of CRS in other hospitals and indicates the importance of rubella vaccinations as a national program in Indonesia.
