RISK FACTORS ANALYSIS OF LOW BIRTH WEIGHT INFANT IN PROF. DR. W. Z. JOHANNES HOSPITAL KUPANG

Background : Low birth weight infant (LBW) is a newborn infant whose weight at birth less than 2500 grams regardless gestational age. The incidence of low birth weight infant in developing countries is higher than in developed countries, this is due to low socioeconomic conditions, where pregnant mothers suffer from malnutrition, maternal complications and maternal knowledge covering maternal age, maternal parity and the number of antenatal care (ANC) visits. Based on Riskesdas 2013 data, the prevalence of LBW in East Nusa Tenggara is 15%. This study aims to analyze the risk factors of low birth weight infant in Prof. Dr. W. Z. Johannes Hospital, Kupang.
Material : A case control study was conducted at Prof. Dr. W. Z. Johannes Hospital, Kupang. Data was taken from medical record of mothers. Subjects were divided into 2 groups: case group with LBW (146 babies) and control group without LBW (146 babies). Samples were collected by stratified random sampling and it was analyzed by Pearson Chi-Square.
Results : The results showed that maternal age (p=0.130; OR=1.522), maternal parity (p=0.477; OR=0.711), number of ANC (p=0.000; OR=4.273), maternal anemia (p=0.803; OR=1.133), maternal preeclampsia (p=0.000; OR=4.668) and premature rupture of membranes (PROM) in the mother (p=0.487; OR=0.824).
Conclusions : Maternal age, maternal parity, maternal anemia and PROM were risk factors but had no significant association. The number of ANC and preeclampsia in the mother were risk factors and had significant associaton to the occurrence of LBW in Prof. Dr. W. Z. Johannes Hospital, Kupang.
