Background : Neonatal asphyxia is a worldwide problem and significantly contributes to neonatal mortality and morbidity. According to WHO, four millions deaths yearly occurred due to birth asphyxia, representing 38% of all deaths of children under 5 years of age. In low-income countries 23% of all neonatal deaths occurred due to birth asphyxia. The aim of this study was to determine the risk factors of neonatal asphyxia in Cianjur hospital, West Java. Material : It was a retrospective case control study, conducted at Neonatal Care Unit of Cianjur hospital, West Java. Study was conducted from January - March 2016. Data were evaluated with Chi-square and also analyzed with SPSS 20.0. For all tests, the 95% confidence interval was calculated and p<0.05 was considered statistically significant. It was said to be significantly associated with asphyxia risk factor if value of p <0.05. Results : From the 1187 infants who was born with risk factors of neonatal asphyxia, 212 infants were diagnosed with neonatal asphyxia. There were significantly correlation between both maternal and neonatal risk factor with asphyxia, which is the associated maternal risk factors were preeclampsia (p = 0.000, OR 2.360 CI 95%, 1.635-3.408), meconium-stained amniotic fluid (MSAF) (p = 0.001, OR 1.808, CI 95% 1.253-2.608), and cesarean section (p = 0.000, OR 2.685, CI 95% 1.980-3.641) and also the associated neonatal risk factors were prematurity (p = 0.000, OR 2.685, CI 95% 1.980-3.641) and low birth weight (p = 0.000, OR 4.436, CI 95% 3.186-6.182). Conclusions : The risk factors for neonatal asphyxia are preeclampsia, meconium-stained amniotic fluid (MSAF), caesarean section, prematurity, and low birth weight.
