REFERENCE INTERVAL OF COMPLETE BLOOD COUNT OF NEWBORN IN BANTUL INDONESIA

Background : Laboratory tests are used to confirm diagnosis, determine physiological function, and determine treatment. When interpreting laboratory data, clinicians compare test results of patients with existing reference ranges. Thus, it is clinically important to determine a reference range of complete blood count for the healthy term newborn. The purpose of this study was to establish a reference range for complete blood count of newborn in Bantul, DIY, Indonesia.
Material : This research was a cross-sectional study which data were obtained directly from the subjects using the cord blood sample. Furthermore, the data were distribution tested and then analyzed with 95% confidence interval. Inclusion criteria was all the newborns at PKU Bantul Hospital on May 2013 - September 2013. Exclusion criteria were newborns with preterm (<37 weeks) or post-term (>40 weeks) gestational age and low birth weight (<2500 grams).
Results : A total of 224 newborns were enrolled in this study. The reference interval of complete blood count of newborns at PKU Muhammadiyah Hospital in Bantul was as follow: erythrocyte count was 4.35±0.42 10^6/uL, hemoglobin was 15.39±1.39 g/dL, hematocrit was 45.33±4.25 %, MCV was 104.43±4.4 fL, MCH was 35.46±1.6 pg, MCHC was 33.98±0.85 g/dL, leukocyte count was 14.62±3.49 10^3/ul, neutrophil was 8.04±2.48 10^3/ul or 54.45±7.55%, lymphocyte was 4.66±1.36 10^3/ul or 32.56±7.53%, monocyte was 1.44±0.44 10^3/ul or 9.89±2 %, eosinophil was 0.37±1.7 l 10^3/ul or 2.63±1.21%, basophil was 0.07±0.07 10^3/ul or 0.47 ± 0.44%, platelet count was 296.69±71.94 10^3/ul.
Conclusions : There was different reference interval of complete blood count at all ages in various countries. The reference values of complete blood count for Indonesian neonatal cord blood need to be confirmed by larger numbers of blood samples from different areas in Indonesia.
