THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MORTALITY, BIRTH WEIGHT, GESTATIONAL AGE WITH BILIRUBIN LEVEL IN NEONATES WITH HYPERBILIRUBINEMIA

Background : Hyperbilirubinemia is a common condition in term infants (50-70%) and preterm infants (80-90%). The Basic Health Research of 2015 showed 51.47% of the incidence of hyperbilirubinemia. Hyperbilirubinemia is one of the causes of death on neonates. Objective to know the relationship between the fetal outcome, birth weight, gestational age with bilirubin levels in neonates with hyperbilirubinemia.
Material : An observational analytic study with a retrospective cohort. The population is all infants treated at NICU Prof.dr.R.D.Kandou Hospital from January 2015-December 2017 with jaundice neonatorum. Inclusion criteria <30 days, bilirubin >5 mg/dl, indirect bilirubin exclusion criteria > 20% of total bilirubin, multiple congenital anomalies. The data were collected and analyzed using SPSS version 24.
Results : Of the 144 infants with hyperbilirubinemia, 91 were male (63.2%) and 53 were female (38.8%). The living patients were 117 (81.3%) and the died patients were 27 (18.8%). The mean bilirubin levels was 13.3 mg/dL, and the mean bilirubin levels of the dead infants was 15.7 mg/dL, it was found to be significantly correlated between the mean of the total bilirubin levels with the value of p=0.026. There was no significant relationship between birth weight and total bilirubin content with the value of p=0.414. There was no significant relationship between gestational age and the mean of the total bilirubin levels with the value of p = 0.280.
Conclusions : The higher the total bilirubin level, the greater the mortality rate in neonates with hyperbilirubinemia. There was no significant relationship between birth weight, gestational age, and total bilirubin levels.
