Background : Neonatal anthropometric measurement is needed to asses the relationship between gestational age and birth size. Mid-upper-arm circumference (MUAC) might be an alternative anthropometric measurement to estimate birth size. It covers the muscular and fat compartments. Indirectly, the muscular compartment represents the protein reserves, while the fat compartment estimates the energy reserves and correlates positively with changes in weight. A study to identify the utility of MUAC as determinant of birth size before, leading us to conduct this study
Material : A retrospective study was conducted to evaluate the birth size based on mid upper arm circumference (MUAC) among preterm babies. A total of 100 neonates, gestational age between 32-35 weeks, born in National General Hospital Dr Cipto Mangunkusumo over three months periods (December 2017 to March 2018) using medical records were included in this study. The measurement of MUAC (in centimeters) was taken by standard tehnique. Newborn nutritional assessment was defined based on birth weight as recommended by Fenton growth chart. The cut off of MUAC was analyzed by ROC curve.
Results : We found 32 weeks was 10%, 33 weeks was 34%, 34 weeks was 34% and 35 weeks was 32%. In 35 and 34 weeks SGA babies, mid upper arm circumference was below 8.5 cm and 7.5 cm respectively (p <0,05). Mid upper arm circumference for 32-33 weeks SGA below 6.5 cm (p>0,05).
Conclusions : Mid upper arm circumference for 34-35 weeks could be used as a determinant of newborn birth size, further research are still needed to validate this study.
