Background : respiratory distress syndrome is a major cause of morbidity in low birth weight infants (LBW). Troponin T is a marker of myocardial damage in premature neonates with asphyxia where high troponin T levels found in premature neonates with respiratory distress syndrome
Material : A Cross-sectional study was conducted, with premature neonates in gestasional age < 36 weeks in neonatology ward of Adam Malik general hospital, Medan. Study data was collected by conducting Down score and troponin T measurements. The data collected were analyzed using Chi Square test
Results : From 35 neonates premature with respiratory distress syndrome, 5 samples were excluded. The total number of samples were 30 premature neonates consisted of 11 boys (37%) and 19 girls (63%). There were 23 premature neonates with respiratory distress syndrome (76,7%) and 7 premature neonates without respiratory distress syndrome (23,3%). Troponin T increases in premature neonates with respiratory distress syndrome. Chi square test with P value = 0.0001
Conclusions : There were relationship between increasing troponin T level and incidence of respiratory distress syndrome in premature neonates
Keywords: premature neonates respiratory distress syndrome troponin T
