Background : Neonatal death contributes mostly to under five years old children mortality. It is estimated that 7.000 newborn die every day. This study aims to describe the cause of neonatal mortality and Case Fatality Rate (CFR).
Material : This descriptive retrospective study analyses the outcomes of all neonatus treated in Dr. Kariadi Hospital in 2017. The data was collected from patient medical record. We were identified causes neonates death and calculated case fatality rates by causes of death, low birth weight, and prematurity. Cause of mortality, gestational age, and birth weight were registered. Statistical analysis was performed in SPSS 25.0.
Results : A total of 1.226 patients were treated in 2017. Overall mortality was 10.4% (n = 127). The common causes of perinatal death were included congenital malformation, asphyxia, respiratory distress/HMD, and Infections/sepsis. Percentages of death were included congenital malformation (45.7%), asphyxia (28.4%), respiratory distress/HMD (22%), and Infections/sepsis (3.9%). CFR among cause low birth weight and preterm were 30.2% and 49.7% respectively. Low birth weight babies accounted for 34% of the live births but contributed for 72.4% of neonatal deaths. Similarly, preterm babies accounted for 20.3% of the live births but contributed for 72.5% of neonatal deaths. Congenital malformation had the highest CFR (43.6%), followed by asphyxia (19.1%), respiratory disease (14.5%), and infections/sepsis (6.3%).
Conclusions : Congenital malformation is the major cause of neonatal mortality and the highest CFR as well.
