Matrix and Metrics of the Pediatric Residency Training in the Philippines

The Philippine Pediatric Society is a professional medical organization of pediatricians founded in 1947. It is the biggest association of pediatric specialists in the country with 6006 members as of April 2018. It provides“leadership in training, teaching, research and expertise in medical and community aspect of child health and ensure an environment for child survival, development, safety and protection.” The Pediatric Residency Training Program is a 3 year outcome based training curriculum with the resident graduate expected to be “5 star physician”health care provider, educator, manager, social mobilizer and researcher. There are 108 accredited training institutions nationwide. The training program is structured and each year level has expected competencies. All training institutions have to be accredited by the Hospital Accreditation Board (HAB) composed of 16 members and chaired by the President of the Society. It makes use of basic and quality standards. A self-assessment instrument has to be accomplished by the training institution and covers6 specific areas namely Vision – Mission, Training Program, Consultant, Administration, Patient Services and Facilities and Community Program. This self-assessment instrument will be validated by a visit of 2 members of the HAB. Accreditation level is classified fromLevel 1- 4 (highest). The Specialty Board (SB) of the society is mandated to give certifying examinationto the resident graduates to determine theircompetence to practice the specialty. It conducts a written and objective structured oral exam (OSOE) twice a year. To prepare the graduates for Board exam a nationwide annual formative assessment tool was started last 2013 namely the Written In Service Examination (WISE). In study conducted by Atienza, Ong, Rodriguez last 2017 the following were the findings: 1. WIISE has a significant positive correlation with the accreditation level of the training hospital. 2. There was a significant relationship between the SB results and the accreditation level. 3. WISE is a significant positive predictor of SB performance.
