Background : Low Birth Weight (LBW) babies still have become problems around the world, especially in developing countries. Low birth weight babies have a higher risk of morbidity and mortality than an infant of normal birth weight. This study was carried out to explore which maternal factors associated with incidence of low birth weight that will be beneficial to reduce the burden of the low birth weight.
Material : This study conducted in Kalisat hospital, Jember, from Jan 1st 2017 to 31th August 2017. An unmatched case control study was done involving 132 cases (mothers of children born with a weight less than 2500 g) and the control group was composed of 132 mothers of newborns of weight greater than or equal to 2500 g. Data were collected from simple questionnaire and review from medical records to estimate prevalence, and determine maternal factors associated with low birth weight in Kalisat hospital. Data analysis was done using IBM SPSS version 23.
Results : We found total 736 babies with the incidence of low birth weight in this study was 17.9%. Finally, after multivariate logistic regression analysis, age of mother (<20 and > 35 years old) found as the significant predictors of low birth weight (OR = 1,927; 95% CI 1,1-3,2). However with the illness during pregnancy, parity, gender of baby, and hemoglobin levels of mothers, the associations were insignificant.
Conclusions : Low birth weight is an important factor for prenatal mortality and morbidity. Age of mother was found to be the significant risk factors contributing to low birth weight.
