THE CORRELATION BETWEEN ANEMIA AND GLOMERULAR FILTRATION RATE IN CHILDREN WITH CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE

Background : Anemia is a common comorbidity in children with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The prevalence of anemia increase with advancing stage of CKD. However, the association between hemoglobin level and glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is unclear. This study aims to determine the correlation between anemia and GFR in children with CKD. Material : A retrospective study was conducted in children with CKD and anemia at Pediatric Nephrology Clinic of Dr. Soetomo Hospital Surabaya from January 2015 to December 2017. The variable data, such as serum iron (SI) level, percent (%) transferrin saturation, haemoglobin level and estimated GFR was obtained from medical record. Statistical analysis using correlation test with significant P<0.05. Results : A total 44 children were included, 22(50%) was at the stage 5 and 12(27.3%) children had iron deficiency anemia. The mean hemoglobin levels of CKD stage 4 = 8.0 (SD 1.7) g/dL and CKD stage 5 = 8.4 (SD 1.1) g/dL were lower than stage 2 = 10.7 g/dL and stage 3 = 8,8 (SD 1.1) g/dL, respectively. There was a positive correlation between anemia and GFR (r=0.321; P=0.034). Conclusions : Anemia should be taken in to account to prevent the present of comorbidity in children with CKD.
