IMPACT OF SHORT LECTURE ON LUPUS NEPHRITIS IN KNOWLEDGE OF CHILDREN WITH LUPUS NEPHRITIS AT DR SOETOMO HOSPITAL

Background : Lupus nephritis (LN) usually manifests more severely in children and can affect many aspects of their lives. The knowledge about LN can impact the relapse rate and the general quality of life. Material : A cross-sectional study was conducted on May 9, 2018 in children with lupus nephritis aged 5-18 years old who attended the World Lupus Day celebration at Dr.Soetomo Hospital. The knowledge score was assessed from children using a 10-questions questionnaire about LN drafted by Division of Nephrology Department of Child Health Universitas Airlangga/Dr Soetomo Hospital, taken before and after the 60 minutes lecture about LN. The scores were categorized to 5 groups based on correct answers: very poor (1-2), poor (3-4), average (5-6), good (7-8), and excellent (9-10). Statistical analysis of paired t test (to compare the pre- and post-lecture knowledge score categories) and Spearman correlation test (to correlate the pre-lecture knowledge score with relapse rate) were used with P<0.05 being significant. Results : A total of 31 children was included in the study, dominated by female (74.2%) children with mean age of 13.6 (SD 2.55) years. Mean duration of illness was 28.2 (SD 28.81, range 1-110) months. No significant correlation was found between pre-lecture knowledge score with relapse rate (P=0.59). There was a significant improvement in knowledge score categories after the lecture (P<0.05). The improvement showed in decreased number in poor, average and good categories after the lecture (2 vs 1, 2 vs 1, 13 vs 9) while the excellent category increased from 14 to 20 children. Conclusions : The lecture significantly improved knowledge score in children with lupus nephritis and the pre-lecture knowledge of these children did not impact the relapse rate.
