CORRELATION OF INTERLEUKIN-6 WITH SERUM IRON, FERRITIN, AND TRANSFERRIN SATURATION IN OBESE CHILDREN

Background : Iron deficiency in obese children is characterized by low iron serum levels or low transferrin saturation. This is due to chronic inflammation that also leads to high levels of Interleukin 6 (IL-6). This study was aimed to prove correlation of IL-6 level with serum iron level, ferritin level, and transferrin saturation in obese children.
Material : This was a cross sectional analytic study in obese children in some Denpasar elementary schools during November 2016 and January 2017. Samples that met inclusion and exclusion criteria were included on this study and had blood sample collection to measure IL-6, serum iron, ferritin, and transferin saturation. Correlation of IL-6 with serum iron, ferritin, and transferring saturation were analyzed using Pearson correlation test.
Results : There were total of 64 subjects included in this study, consisted of healthy obese children aged 6 to 10 years. The mean of IL-6 was 3.5 pg/ml; mean of serum iron level was 58 ?g/dL; mean of transferrin saturation was 18.6 ± 7.6%; mean of ferritin level was 78.2 ?g/dL. There was a significant negative correlation between IL-6 and serum iron (r=0.41; p=0.001); significant negative correlation between IL-6 and transferin saturation (r=0.40; p=0.001), and there was no significant correlation between IL-6 and ferritin.
Conclusions : There were significant negative correlation between IL-6 and serum iron level, significant negative correlation between IL-6 and transferrin saturation, but there was no significant correlation between IL-6 and ferritin. Further studies are needed to determine the causal relationship between IL-6 and iron status in obese children.
