Association between Picky Eating with Nutritional and Health Status of Preschool Children

Background : Parents are often faced with eating problems on children. Picky eaters have potential to has nutrition deficiency. In long term, this behavior will affect the growth, nutritional and health status of the children. The purpose of this study is to assess picky eating prevalence among preschool children and evaluate the association between eating behavior to nutritional and health status.
Material : Questionnaire was used to do cross-sectional descriptive study from 80 parents of children aged 3-5 years in Manado. The data that were collected include: food preference, eating behavior, weight, height and medical illness record.
Results : Average age of children is 4.33; 34 (42.5%) was picky eaters. Compared to non-picky eaters, from nutritional status of WHO z-score weight-to-height, we found that 23 children (28.8%) are on nutrition deficient, and there is significant association between nutritional status with picky eating (p-value= 0.0001). Based on age, there is a significant difference in BMI – for – age percentiles <15 percentage between picky eaters and non-picky eaters (p-value= 0.000). Among picky eaters, as much as 26 (32.5%) participants were infected once in the last 3 months, compared to 8 participants only on non-picky eaters. Also, 6 picky eaters were infected more than once in the last 3 months. Thus, it can be concluded that there is significant association be-tween infection and picky eating behavior (p-value= 0.0001).
Conclusions : Prevalence of picky eating on this study 42,5% , and eating behavior have a significant disadvantageous impact on nutritional and health status.
