CASE REPORT THE EFFECT OF DIET ON MALNUTRITION IN ASMAT DISTRICT OF PAPUA

Background : Socioeconomic and educational factors of a society can provide an overview about different of dietary differences as well as affecting malnutrition in infants. At the end of 2017 until the beginning of January 2018 in the Asmat District of Papua Province occurred an Extraordinary Event of malnutrition case with the number of 228 patients and with 11 people suffering from complications of malnutrition. Malnutrition in infants occurs because of a diet that puts adults first before the toddlers. Malnutrition was diagnosed based on the basis of clinical manifestations, weight/length < -3SD of the median WHO child growth standard, and measurement of upper arm circumference (UAC) <110 mm.
Case Presentation Summary : Case report 1: AW, 4 years 19 days, is diagnosed as malnutrition with complications of miliary TB, right lung atelectasis, and hypochromic microcytic anemia. As a child, AW always gets the last food so it is not uncommon AW not to eat for days if the food stocks have been depleted consumed by the parents and other family members. Case report 2: SA, 3 years 5 months, is diagnosed as malnutrition without any complication. SA gets to eat only after the parents other adult family members have already had their fill. If the food stock is exhausted, SA will not eat for days.
Learning Points/Discussion : The treatment and feeding practices of caregivers or parents is a key factor that causes malnutrition. The diet that put the adults first will cause malnutrition in infants.
