CLINICAL MANIFESTATION AND ANTHROPOMETRY OF CHILDREN WITH SUSPECTED COW'S MILK PROTEIN ALLERGY

Background : Cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA) in children has no pathognomonic but a wide variety of symptoms and clinical manifestations including digestive and respiratory symptoms. The contribution of various factors to malnutrition one of them is CMPA and data describing the clinical manifestations in children with suspected CMPA is still limited. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence and clinical manifestation in children suspected CMPA in Dr. Soetomo Hospital, Surabaya.
Material : A retrospective study was performed on children suspected CMPA in pediatric ward Dr. Soetomo Hospital, Surabaya in 2016-2017. Children aged 1 month-5 years old was included. Diagnostic of suspected CMPA was based on recommendation of CMPA from Indonesian Pediatric Society. The anthropometric measurement using WHO 2009 chart was obtained from medical record.
Results : A total of 127 children were included, 77 children (60.6%) were male. Most of children have digestive symptoms 82 (64.6%), with mean age 16.17 (SD 1.55) month, include 52.4% were wasted, 50% were stunted, and 51.2% had normal WAZ. The mean age of children with the respiratory symptoms was 9.62 (SD1.39) month, include 57.8% were wasted, 53.4% were stunted, and 64.5% were underweight.
Conclusions : Most of children with suspected CMPA have digestive symptoms. Children with digestive symptoms are mostly wasted and stunted, while children with respiratory symptoms are mostly, wasted, stunting and underweight.
