EFFECT OF FEEDING PRACTICE ON INFANT AND TODDLERS NUTRITIONAL STATUS AT PASAR REBO, JAKARTA IN 2017

Background : Based on data from World Health Organization (WHO), malnutrition comprised about 45% of death among children under 5 years old globally in 2016. According to the annual report of Pasar Rebo district Puskesmas in 2016, there were 57 underweight children in Pasar Rebo district. This number was quite high compared to other districts. There are several internal and external factors that contribute to the high number of underweight in Pasar Rebo. We aimed to find these factors, specifically feeding practice conducted by parents. Material : This cross-sectional study obtained primary data from Pasar Rebo district Puskesmas. These data were obtained through validated questionnaires filled by mothers with children under five years old lived in the coverage area of Pasar Rebo district Puskesmas. From November until December 2017, 65 respondents from Pasar Rebo district met our inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results : Out of 65 respondents, there were 22 (33.8%) respondents who have underweight children. There were no differences between those two groups in the component of children’s age, sex, and birth order, parent’s educational status and occupation, family income status, but distance between residence and health center (p value = 0.035). Mothers with underweight children had lower feeding practice score than mother with nourished children. Statistically, the differences were in the components of teaching children to eat properly, forcing children to finish their food, and alternating the location of food storage. Conclusions : Mothers with underweight children had lower feeding practice score than mother with nourished children. The nutritional status of children was determined by multifactorial feeding practice.
