USAGE OF FOODS FOR SPECIAL MEDICAL PURPOSES IN PEDIATRIC WARD DR SOETOMO HOSPITAL SURABAYA

Background : Adequate nutrition during hospitalization is essential. Undernutrition, which can be caused by the underlying disease has a long-term impact on the health of a child. The patient requires foods for special medical purposes (FSMP) to meet the nutritional needs during hospitalization. The aim of this study is to classify patients in pediatric ward who received FSMP based on the indications.
Material : Children who have received FSMP in pediatric ward of Dr. Soetomo hospital Surabaya between April 2017-April 2018 were enrolled and data was collected from medical record retrospectively. The appropriate indications for FSMP usage were based on Indonesian Pediatric Society dose book of pediatric medicine.
Results : There were 385 children enrolled in this study. Usage of FSMP were in malnutrition 253 patients (65.7%), volume limitation 49 patients (12.7%), malabsorption 46 patients (11.9%) and cow’s-milk protein allergy (CMPA) 37 patients (9.7%). Frequently used FSMP were Pepti junior® which was used in 144 patients (37.4%), Nutrini® 75 patients (19.5%), Peptamen junior® 54 patients (14%) and Infantrini® 41 patients (10.6%).
Conclusions : There were widely usage of FSMP in Dr. Soetomo hospital Surabaya to meet the nutritional requirements of the patient during hospitalization.
