THE USE OF NONINVASIVE VENTILATOR IN PEDIATRIC INTENSIVE CARE UNIT (PICU) OF DR MOEWARDI GENERAL HOSPITAL SURAKARTA

Background : Noninvasive ventilator (NIV) is a mechanical ventilation support without endotracheal intubation. The use of noninvasive ventilator has increased recently as it has more beneficial effects compared to the invasive one. The aim of this study is to describe the use of noninvasive ventilator in PICU of Dr. Moewardi General Hospital, Surakarta Material : This retrospective study was performed in pediatric patients receiving NIV therapy between November 2016 and May 2018 in PICU of Dr. Moewardi General Hospital, Surakarta. The data taken from the medical records were age, type of respiratory failure, length of NIV use, interface, and the success of NIV use. Results : During the study period there were 25 pediatric patients receiving NIV therapy. Of these 12 (48%) boys and 13 (52%) were girls with age ranged from 1 months to 132 months (mean 14.6 months). The use of NIV in 2016, 2017 and recently (up to May 2018) were 4, 14, and 7 respectively. The most common type of respiratory failure is respiratory failure type 2 (72%) and type 1 (38%). The length of NIV use was between 1 and 5 days (mean 3 days). The most common interface was oronasal mask (52%) followed by nasopharyngeal tube (48%). The success of NIV use occured in 15 (60%) patients. Conclusions : The use of NIV in pediatric patients in the PICU has increased significantly from time to time with a good success rate.
