CORRELATION OF NUTRITIONAL STATUS WITH SEVERITY OF BRONCHOPNEUMONIA IN CHILDREN UNDER 5 YEARS OLD AT PROF DR R D KANDOU HOSPITAL MANADO

Background : Bronchopneumonia is an acute respiratory infection which is the leading cause of children mortality in aged less than 5 years in developing countries. The aim of this study is to find out the correlation between nutritional status and the severity of bronchopneumonia in children aged less than 5 years in Prof. dr. R.D. Kandou Hospital Manado.
Material : A retrospective study with statistic analytic using chi-square test, data were taken from medical records of Prof. dr. R.D. Kandou Hospital Manado. Samples were children aged less than 5 years old treated with bronchopneumonia in March to August 2017, with various nutritional status (good nutrition, mild malnutrition, severe malnutrition and overweight).
Results : Subjects (n=197) were children aged less than 5 years. The indicator used for nutritional status was based on weight per height with WHO 2006 chart. Thirty percent subjects with good nutritional status had bronchopneumonia, 42,4% subjects with mild malnutrition had severe bronchopneumonia, 76,9% subjects with severe malnutrition had severe bronchopneumonia, 62,5% subjects with overweight had severe bronchopneumonia. The result showed a significant relationship between nutritional status and the severity of bronchopneumonia with p < 0.05.
Conclusions : Malnutrition (mild, severe, and overweight) had significant relationship with the severity of bronchopneumonia in children aged less than 5 years in Prof. dr. R.D. Kandou Hospital Manado.
