THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EXCLUSIVE BREASTFEEDING WITH FREQUENCY OF ACUTE RESPIRATORY INFECTION EVENTS IN RURAL AREA OF INDONESIA

Background : Acute respiratory infection (ARI) is still major cause of morbidity and mortality in children. ARI are divided into upper ARI and lower ARI. Previous research has shown that exclusive breastfeeding for at least 6 months may decrease the incidence of ARI in Infants.The objective of this research was to determine the relationship between exclusive breastfeeding and the frequency of ARI events on infants aged 6 months to 1 year in Puskesmas Cikarang.
Material : The dependent variables included the frequency of ARI events in infants 6 months to 1 year, the frequency of upper ARI events, and the frequency of lower ARI events. This research used correlation method with cross sectional approach. Samples were mothers with infants aged 6 months to 1 year with exclusive and non exclusive breastfeeding. Seventy five mothers with exclusive breastfed-infants and 75 mothers with non exclusive breastfed-infants were selected with purposive sampling method. The data were collected by using questionnaire on January 2018 to May 2018.
Results : The results of first study showed the proportion of exclusively breastfed infants who often suffered from ARI were 6.7%, while the non-breastfed infants were 29.3%. Chi square test value (? = 0,05) was p = 0,000. The second study showed the proportion of exclusively breastfed infants who often suffered from upper ARI were 16%, while the non-breastfed infants were 69.3%. Chi square test value (? = 0,05) was p = 0,000. The third study showed the proportion of exclusively breastfed infants who often suffered from a lower ARI were 1.3%, while non-exclusive breastfed infants were 14.7%. Chi square test value (? = 0,05) was p = 0,003.
Conclusions : The conclusion is there was a significant relationship between exclusive breastfeeding and the frequency of ARI events on infants aged 6 months to 1 year in Puskesmas Cikarang.
