ADOLESCENT'S KNOWLEDGE ON HIV AIDS IN RESOURCES-CHALLENGED AREAS

Background : Many adolescents around the world are sexually active and many of them are at risk due to unprotected sexual contacts, including the risk of HIV/AIDS. The vulnerability due to lack of sex education is one of the most important things that have to be changed. Indonesian youth nowadays experiencing an increasing health hazard, such as sexual health and threat of HIV/AIDS. The objective of the study was to determine the level of knowledge among adolescent in a rural area. Material : This study is using a cross-sectional study with 94 respondents from junior and senior high school in Pramuka Island. All sample filled out structured questionnaires about knowledge of HIV/AIDS. Results : From a total of 94 samples, half subjects were boys and others were girls. The age was between 12 to 17 years-old. Adolescent boys have a lower level of knowledge than the adolescent girls, only 12 (25,5) boys has a good level of knowledge regarding HIV/AIDS. Yet more than half (59,6%) girls have a good level of knowledge due to this issue. There were a significant association between sex and the knowledge of HIV/AIDS (p=0.001). Conclusions : Most adolescent had low level of knowledge about HIV/AIDS. An improved approach in HIV/AIDS or other sexually transmitted infections education, especially among young males, with greater participation of school and public is advised.
