EARLY DETECTION OF ADOLESCENT IDIOPATHIC SCOLIOSIS IN COMMUNITY

Background : Most cases of idiopathic scoliosis occurs in between age 10 and the time a child is fully grown. Scoliosis is rarely painful – small curves often go unnoticed by children during a school screening or at a regular check-up with pediatricians for early detection. The objective of study is to describe prevalence adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) in community.
Material : This was a descriptive study with a cross-sectional design, with consecutive sampling. A convenience sample of 100 adolescent, 10-12 years of age selected from elementary schools, levels 5 and 6 at August - September 2017 in Padang city. The screening was using assessment in accordance with physical examination of the deformity spine. Proceed to Adam’s Forward Bend Test if found any disalignment change and exist of the hump, it is test for determining whether functional scoliosis or structural scoliosis.
Results : Characteristic respondent of boys 54/100(54%), mean of age 10.96 years (SD 0.803 (10-12), elementary school of level 5 is 56/100 (46%) and level 6 is 54/100(54%). After Identification of visual inspection the back of respondents, found that disalignment change and exist of the hump is 14/100 (14%). Scoliosis of respondent obtained 5/100 (5%) total, 2/100 (2%) boys and 3/100 (3%) girls, then after Adam’s Forward Bending Test found that 3/100(3%) functional scoliosis and 2/100 (2%) structural scoliosis on adolescents.
Conclusions : The prevalence adolescent idiophatic scoliosis was 5% in community.
