Pediatric Residency Training Program in Thailand

The Royal College of Pediatricians of Thailand (RCPT) is an institution under regulation of the Medical Council of Thailand (TMC) since 1972. The RCPT certifies general pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists based on standards of the program. Certification provides assurance to the public that a general pediatrician or pediatric subspecialist has successfully completed accredited training and fulfills continuous evaluation requirements. Pediatric Residency Training began in 1972. The curriculum has been continuously updated to keep up with the ever-growing of medical technologies and knowledge. Currently, there are 25 accredited institutions for training 200-230 positions each year. The RCPT adopts the Postgraduate Medical Education WFME Global Standards 2015 for quality improvement and accreditation of the program. Pediatric residency training program is practice-based and trainee-centered. This is a competencies-based curriculum with a minimum of 3-year course. The first 2 years is the training in general pediatrics including community and social pediatrics, child development and behavioral pediatrics as well as adolescent medicine. The final year serves as the chief resident and a wide variety of elective experience according to the institution context. The traineeis expected to achieve seven core competencies: professionalism, communication and interpersonal skills, pediatric knowledge, patient care and procedural skills, health system and health promotion, continuous professional development and leadership. Course commences on 1 July, annually, participant must hold Medical Diploma and professional license for medical practitioner prior to apply to the program. The evaluations consists of both institution and national assessmentwhich cover knowledge, skills andattitude. The trainees must be satisfied and certified by the training institution for their 3-year trainings. And they have to submit thesis, portfolio to be qualified for the national examination. The national examinations include MCQ, OSCE, CRQ and portfolio. Those who pass the national examinations will be certified as Thai Board of Pediatrics by TMC
