Background : Diphtheria is a reemerging disease which can be prevented by vaccination to avoid severe case.
Material : Observational preliminary analytic study involves data from tropical medicine division database. We used categoric correlation analysis to find correlation between history of vaccination and severity of the disease.
Results : In 2017, from 43 patients hospitalized for diphtheriae, 41 (95.35%) patients recounted the histories of diphtheria vaccination. 24 received adequate vaccination (58.54%), 15 received deficient vaccination (36.58%), 2 didn’t receive vaccination (4.88%). Among 24 patients received adequate vaccination 18 suffered moderate diphtheria (75%) while 6 suffered severe diphtheria (25%). Among 15 patients received deficient vaccination 14 suffered moderate diphtheria (93.3%) while 1 suffered severe diphtheria (6.7%). 2 patients received no vaccination suffered moderate diphtheriae (100%).
Conclusions : This preliminary study concluded that adequate frequency of diphthteria vaccination dose did not correlate with the severity of diphtheria cases. The further investigation with larger sample size is needed.
