Immunization Status and Antibody Level of Hepatitis B and Measles in HIV Exposed Uninfected Children

Background : HIV exposed uninfected (HEU) infants are increasing in number due to successful implementation of HIV Prevention Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) program. Previous studies showed that HEU infants have increased morbidity and mortality especially from infectious causes compared with those born from uninfected mothers. Vaccine efficacy also reported lower in HEU children, but data from Indonesia are not known. in this study, we evaluate immunization status and antibodies level against hepatitis B and measlesĀ in HEU children Material : A cross sectional study conducted on HEU infants aged 1-18 months in Infectious Diseases Intermediate Care Unit (UPIPI) Out Patients Clinics Sutomo Hospital Surabaya, during January-April 2017. Immunization data were recorded and blood samples were collected for Hepatitis B and measles antibody level examination in BBLK Surabaya and presented as positive, equivocal or negative Results : There were 32 HEU infants during study period, with age <6month 46%, and 41% age 6-12month. Immunization status were complete according their age in 65% infants. Hepatitis B vaccination was incomplete in 22% children, but Hepatitis B Antibody were positive in 97% children, equivocal in 1 child. Measles vaccination were incomplete (70%) and not given in children in 12.5%, accordingly, the measles antibody were negative in 78% and equivocal in 6% children. Conclusions : Immunization coverage against Hepatitis B and measles in HEU are relatively low. Antibody against measles were negative in most HEU children.
