Background : Malnutrition and frequent infection leads to a vicious cycle of worsening nutritional status and increased susceptibility to infection. We assessed the relation of stunting to frequency of hospitalization, anemia and chronic illness.
Material : A cross-sectional study among 114 children aged 1-60 months was conducted et April 2018. The data of antropometric measurement, frequency of hospitalization, anemia, and disease of the patients were obtained from medical record. Stunting status was measured with z-score height for age (H/A) from the WHO Child Growth Standards 2007 for the same age and sex. Mann whitney U and Spearmann correlation test were used to analyze the data.
Results : The median values of hospitalization frequency in the stunting and non stunting group was 2 (min.-max 1-37), and 1 (min.-max 1-29) (p=0.412), respectively. Before and after age adjustment, there was no correlation between stunting and hospitalization frequency (p = 0.414, 1-12 months p=0.373, 13-24 months p=0.320, 3-5 months p=0.665) (p>0.05). Anemia (OR 2.37, p = 0.025, 95% CI 1.13-5.04) and chronic disease (OR 4.17, p = 0.003, 95% Ci 1.6-10.85) were significantly associated with stunting.
Conclusions : There is no correlation between stunting and hospitalization frequency. However, anemia and chronic diease are significantly associated with stunting in children under 5 years of age.
