RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN STUNTING AND SCHOOL READINESS

Background : School readiness is a child's ability to achieve adequate levels of emotional, physical and cognitive development so that children are able or successful. School readiness should be prepared since the child is at an early age, so that the child will be ready to face the learning process. Stunting is related to poor school performance in childhood and reduced productivity in the future. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between stunting and school readiness. Material : This was an observational analytic study with cross sectional design, conducted at two elementary schools in Malalayang sub district, Manado, North Sulawesi. Sample was conducted in two step random sampling from January until March 2018. Fifty four subjects aged six until before seven years old, healthy and parents agreed to participate were included in the study. Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem caused by poor nutrient intake over long periods. Stunting was determined by height for age under 3 percentile according the CDC 2000 curve. School readiness consists of physical and psychological readiness, which includes emotional, social, and mental preparedness. School readiness was assessed by Nijmeegse Schoolbekwaamheids Test (NST) and performed by a psychologist. The results were analyzed using Phi correlation analysis, the significant value used was p <0.05. Results : From 54 subjects, there were 29 (53.7%) girls. The mean height was 118 (SD 6.908) cm. The results of this test obtained r? = 0.473 with p = 0.001. There was a significant relationship between stunting and school readiness, (p=0.001) with OR 24 (95% CI 2.3 to 247.4) Conclusions : There was a significant relationship between stunting and school readiness.
