Clarissa Theodora,Michelle Husin Puskesmas Kelurahan Kedaung Kali Angke
Background : Exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months plays a great role in preventing mortality and morbidity. In 2016, rate of exclusive breastfeeding in Jakarta was 41%, which was higher than national rate (29.5%). Sociodemographic and biosocial factors of the urban population seemed influencing exclusive breastfeeding practice. The study aimed to determine the prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding at 6 months and its associated factors in Kedaung Kali Angke (KKA) area. Material : A cross-sectional study was conducted in KKA, West Jakarta area from April to May 2017. A total of 145 mothers of infants aged between 6 and 24 months, who attended Maternal and Child Health Centre (Posyandu) in KKA Public Health Centre (Puskesmas), were interviewed by doctors. Structured questionnaire was used to obtain sociodemographic, and other information concerning exclusive breastfeeding practice (family support, duration, counselling, and reason discontinuing breastfeeding). A logistic regression analysis was performed to identify factors associated with exclusive breastfeeding in that area. Results : Exclusive breastfeeding was practiced by 64.8% (n=94) mothers in KKA area. The average age of mothers during child birth were 27.96 yo (SD=5.52), most of them went to high school (55.9%), and stayed at home as housewives (79.3%). Almost half of them had one child (44.1%). Logistic regression analysis showed that family support (OR=6.81, 95%CI=2.567-18.08, P<0.05) was positively associated, while working mother (OR=0.268, 95%CI=0.12-0.62, P<0.05) was negatively associated with 6 months exclusive breastfeeding practice. Conclusions : The prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding in KKA was higher than regional and national prevalence. It was proven that the role of family support improved exclusive breastfeeding practice. Beside targeting on working mothers, breastfeeding promotion should also start to focus on family members.
