Implementation of vaccine preventable disease control in the US: surveillance and advocacy experiences

The maintenance of high infant and childhood vaccination rates coupled with continuous monitoring and surveillance is critical for the control of vaccine preventable diseases and for decreasing the morbidity and mortality associated with them. Being a strong vaccine advocate for infants and children is fundamental for ensuring that this population is adequately protected. Pediatricians and the American Academy of Pediatrics have played a critical role in controlling vaccine preventable diseases in the US, and advocating for new measures and guidelines to ensure children continue to be protected. Examples of the importance of surveillance and advocacy will be discussed.
