Background : Higher milk protein concentrations increase infancy weight gain and predisposition to obesity. Rapid infancy weight gain and obesity can relate to breastmilk macronutrient content. The aim of this study is to compare overweight and obesity infants and normal anthropometry infants at Dr. Soetomo Hospital Surabaya on breastmilk macronutrient content.
Material : A case control study was performed at Dr. Soetomo Hospital Surabaya from March - April 2018. The patients were divided into 2 groups, overweight and obesity as group 1 and normal anthropometry as group 2. The data were collected from questionnaire by the mother. Statistical analysis was using comparation test with p<0.05 being considered significant.
Results : A total of 20 infants included in this study with mean age 5.8 ± 2.8 months and mean of weight was 7775 (SD 2171) gram. The nutritional status were overweight 8 (40%), obesity 2 (10%), and normal anthropometry 10 (50%). The breastmilk macronutrient content consisted of lipid (mean 3.3 ± 1.7 gram), protein (mean 1.3 ± 0.4 gram), and carbohydrate (mean 2.9 ± 0.8 gram),). There were significant difference of lipid breastmilk between group 1 vs group 2 (14.45 vs 6.55, p=0.003) and carbohydrate breastmilk between both of groups (6.55 vs 14.45, p=0.003). There was not significant difference of protein between both of groups (8.95 vs 12.05, p=0.224).
Conclusions : Lipid and carbohydrate as the breastmilk macronutrient content can affect the body weight of breastfed infants.
