PREVALENCE OF PEDIATRIC SURGERY CASES IN TARAKAN HOSPITAL, JAKARTA

Background : Pediatric surgery cases are frequently found in daily practice. There are many variation of cases and surgery procedures that can be done. According to recent estimates, at least 11% of of the total global burden of disease is attributable to surgically-treatable diseases. In children under 15 years, the burden is even more striking with up to 85% in low and middle income countries (LMIC).
Material : This was a descriptive, retrospective study from January to April 2018. The data were taken from medical records in Pediatric Wards and Level II Nursery Room of Tarakan Hospital, Jakarta.
Results : There were 54 subjects consisted of 35 males and 19 females. 27,8% of the subject were neonates, 22,2% were infants, 27,8% were children under five years and the rest are children of five years or older. The most common diagnosis was hirschprung disease, found in 14 cases (25,9%), followed by appendicitis in 8 cases (14,8%), hernia inguinalis in 6 cases (11,1%), malformation of anorectal in 4 cases (7,4%) and the rest of the diagnosis were chordee penis, multiple cholelithiasis, gluteal abcess, HAEC (Hirschprung Associated Enterocolitis), necrotizing enterocolitis, hydrocele, hypertrophic pylorus stenosis, diverticulum meckel, atresia duodenum, atresia ileum, and stenosis urethra.
Conclusions : Pediatric surgery cases are frequently found in all levels of health care facilities. A better understanding of the signs and symptoms of these diseases is needed, so the treatment will not be delayed and can improve their outcome.
