Pediatric Palliative Care in Indonesia: A Pediatric Oncologist Perspective

Cancer can happen to anyone included children. In Indonesia, unfortunately, most of them come to the
hospital already in the late stage . Data showed that almost 50% of patients that treated in the Pediatric Oncology Department, “Dharmais” Cancer Hospital are stage IV patients. Even they already in there late stage, they still have the right to live with a good quality of life. Pediatric Palliative Care is the solution for these children.
In Indonesia, the concern about palliative care increasing since JCI accreditation was introduced. All hospitals that want to be JCI accredited have to run palliative care.
Government through the Ministry of Health initiated the National Guidelines for Palliative and Technical Guideline for Pediatric Palliative Care. Since then, more and more pediatrician were
introduced to Pediatric Palliative Care.
The philosophy of palliative is not common in the Indonesian people. a lot of misunderstanding about
what is Pediatric Palliative Care all about is debatable in the community. Socialization needed not only
for pediatricians but also for the Indonesian people it self. Its not easy, but it doesn’t mean cannot be done.
