Neonatal Research Network in Japan and International Collaboration (iNEO)

Neonatal Research Network Japan (NRNJ) established in 2004 isa collaborative network of neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) across Japanto facilitate neonatal clinical research and quality improvement of NICU care. Three major activity of NRNJ are (1) to conduct randomized controlled trials, (2) todevelop and maintain the national neonatal database of very low birth weight (VLBW) or preterm infants (BW≤1500g or < 32 weeks gestational age), and (3) to develop and maintain the follow-up system of these infants. As of 2017, 192 NICUs participates in NRNJ and the NRNJ database covers more than70 % of VLBW infants in Japan. The database has been collectingdetailed data ofinfants and their mothers (maternal age, maternal complications, delivery modes, antenatal steroids, multiple births, birth weight and gestational age, neonatal complications, etc.) as well as follow up data (cerebral palsy, neurodevelopmental impairment, hearing or vision impairment, etc.). The NRNJ database has been used in many studies investigating short- and long-term outcomes of preterm infants and their risk factors. The NRNJ database was also used for comparing the outcomes of preterm infants between Japan and other countries. The initial study comparingJapan with Canada found significant between-country differences in outcomes. Stimulated by this interesting finding, the International Network for Evaluation of Outcomes in neonates (iNEO) was developed as an international collaboration of national or regional neonatal networks, in which 11 countries or regions (10 networks) currently participate including the neonatal networks of Japan, Australia/New-Zealand, Canada, Sweden, Finland, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Spain, Israel, and Tuscany (Italy). The iNEO found a wide variation in infants’ outcomes and clinical practice between networks. In this presentation, I will present the findings of these NRNJ and iNEO studies.
