Stem Cell Therapy in the Perinatal Brain Injury of the Neonate

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) in term newborn infants or severe (grade 3 or 4) intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) in the preterm infants are major causesof significant mortality and life-long neurological morbidities including seizures, cerebral palsy, and developmental retardation. However, no effective treatment modalities are available for these intractable perinatal brain diseases in the newborn infants so far. Recent experimental data suggest that mesenchymalstem cell (MSC) transplantation could be a promising new therapeutic modality for neuroprotection againstHIE and severe IVH in the newborn infants. Here, the preclinical research data about the therapeutic efficacy, optimaltiming, and optimal route of human umbilical cord blood-derivedMSC transplantation in protecting against severe IVH will be presented. For HIE, preclinical data regarding thetherapeutic efficacy of MSC therapy for severe HIE, and the synergistic effects of combined treatment of MSC transplantation with therapeutic hypothermia in the newborn infants will be presented. Also, the data for phase I clinical study of MSC transplantation for severe IVH in extremely preterm infants will be also presented and discussed.
