Disaster and Outbreak in Indonesia

Indonesia is one of the countries in Asia Pacific region that has larger mainland area thanocean area. Indonesia is also one of the countries in Asia Pacific region that has more population after China and India. According to National data, Indonesia has 17,504 islands, 127 actively volcanic mountain, 2,001,648.97 km2 mainland area and 3,544,743.9 km2 ocean area. Indonesia also has 127 actively volcanic mountain which makes this countrymore vulnerable to natural disaster. Some disasters had happened in Indonesia such as volcanic eruption, landslide, hurricane also earthquake and tsunami.
A disaster is a serious disruption, occurring over a relatively short period of time. It affects the functioning of a community or society involving not only people but also material, economic and environmental loss. It exceeds the ability of the affected community or society to cope using its own resources.An outbreak is the occurrence of disease in excess of what would normally be expected in a defined community, geographical area or season. An outbreak may occur in a restricted geographical areaor may extend over several countries. It may last for a few days or weeks, or for several years.
Indonesia had been hit by several disasters and outbreak such as volcanic eruption, landslide, hurricane, earthquake that followed by tsunami, severe malnutrition, measles anddiphteriae. Indonesian Pediatric Society in ordertoovercome the problems had done several activities such as providing health services during disasters, direct coordination with Ministry of Health to provide health access and helping Indonesia’s program of immunization during outbreak. As these problems continue to exist, Indonesian Pediatric Society is expected to always prepare for disasters and outbreaks.
