The good, the bad and the ugly of social media in child health issues

Social media is now very familiar to the middle-class people in Indonesia. Besides the positive impact, the negative side can also affect the community. The massive spread of various health-related hoaxes such as immunization can reduce the immunization coverage significantly. Sensitive issues such as the halal-haram problem that is spread widely via social media can affect people's attitudes toward immunization. The anti-vaccine groups have successfully utilized this social media to achieve their goals. It is time for health professionals to actively take advantage of social media in order to spread a positive campaign on various health problems while simultaneously countering hoaxes in the community. Also important is that a strict legal action to be taken for hoax spreadersas the impact can cause re-emerging disease outbreaks such as diphteria outbreaks at the end of 2017 in Indonesia.
