Background : Skin prick test has been used as standard method to diagnose the allergic disease. Skin reactivity to histamine and allergen could be affected by various factors. However, we do not have enough knowledge about the affect of body mass index (BMI) to skin reactivity. Therefore, we aim to investigate the change of skin reactivity to histamine and allergens according to change of BMI.
Material : Data of 230 children were enrolled in this analysis. Data collection was carried out twice in 2010 and 2012. Skin prick test was performed with 26 aeroallergens and other variables were obtained, including sex, age, BMI, parental allergy history, and parental smoking. Multivariate analysis was used to confirm the association between changes of skin reactivity and body mass index.
Results : Mean size of skin wheal induced histamine and BMI were increased for the two years. The change of histamine wheal size for two years was significantly associated with the change of BMI for same period (Spearman’s Rho 0.209, P-value 0.001). However, the size change of Dermatophagoides farinae (Df) and Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Dp) for two years was not correlated with the change of BMI.
Conclusions : Histamine skin responses are associated with increased body mass index. However, the wheal size change of Df and Dp was not associated with the change of BMI. We should consider this result when we interprret result of skin prick test
