ASSOCIATION BETWEEN CAREGIVER'S BACKGROUND AND HIV-INFECTED CHILDREN'S ADHERENCE TO ANTIRETROVIRAL THERAPY IN RSCM

Background : Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection causes AIDS, and is still one of the main health problems in the world. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) becomes highly important to improve the patients’ quality of life and to expand their life expectancies. Many factors affect adherence in children. One of the factors is the caregiver’s issues. This study was aimed to analyze the association between caregiver’s background and HIV-infected children’s adherence in Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, Jakarta, Indonesia.
Material : This research used a cross-sectional method with 94 caregivers as the subjects. The data was collected with a questionnaire to record the caregiver’s demographics data and adherence of the HIV-infected children under their care.
Results : Most of caregivers were female (89.4%) with median age of 41 (26-68) years old. Most of the caregivers had middle level of education (64.9%) and low social-economic level (75.5%). Fifty one percent of these caregivers were not the biological parents of these HIV-infected children. Most of them were involved in HIV-related patients support group (55.3%). There was no significant association between caregiver’s background and the patients’ adherence to HIV medication.
Conclusions : In this study, we did not find significant association between caregiver’s background and adherence to antiretroviral therapy among HIV-infected children.
