Background : Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) impacts the growth and development of children and increases the risk for behavioral problems, including emotional and peer problems. The impact of DCD in Indonesian children has not been reported to date. Objectives: To assess the impact of DCD on behaviour in school-age children.
Material : This cross-sectional study was done in children aged six to 12 years at four elementary schools in Jakarta and Tangerang from November 2015 to November 2016. Children with probable DCD were identified using the Modified Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire (DCDQ'07) screening tool. The DCD diagnosis was confirmed by a pediatric neurologist using the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test for Motor Proficiency, Short Form. Behavioral problems were evaluated using the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), Indonesian version. Children with DCD were paired with 54 controls matched by age, sex, and school grade.
Results : Out of 861 children, we identified 104 children with probable DCD; 27 had confirmed DCD. Compared to controls, children with confirmed DCD were more likely to have behavioral disorders (OR 13.43, 95%CI 3.85 to 49.53; p≤0.001), emotional problems (OR 13.0, 95%CI 2.27 to 96.98; p≤0.001), and peer problems (OR 5.26, 95%CI 1.23 to 24.10; p=0.017).
Conclusions : In school-age children, DCD increases the risk of behavioral disorders, including emotional and peer problems, up to thirteen-fold. Sceening for DCD using a tool such as the Modified DCDQ’07 may help in the early diagnosis of DCD and prevention of such behavioral problems.
